Bor-plastika Ltd.

Implementation of Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) technology

About the company and the project impact

Bor-plastika, a privately-owned company from Croatia, quickly evolved into a fast-growing business dealing with a wide spectrum of products made from thermoplastic. While continually improving its production technologies, the company expanded its range of products to wastewater treatment and air treatment for plants and other various types of facilities in need of such treatments. A team of experts has developed a new type of wastewater treatment for different kinds of wastewaters.

The KET4CleanProduction Pilot project was used for improving the operation of municipal aerobic biological wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) with biomass carriers and MBBR technology ("Moving bed biofilm reactor"). Those types of wastewater treatment plants are used in a situation where there is a significant variation in hydraulic and organic load in raw wastewater, such as tourist facilities: hotels, apartments and weekend resorts.

Outcome

By switching to MBBR technology, the company has reduced the raw material consumption for the production of wastewater treatment plants and thereby initiated a chain reaction of savings in almost every stage of production of wastewater treatment plants.

In addition to the savings, the company has received much better outputs of treated wastewater, making the entire project eco-friendly. With the help of laboratory testing, development of certain bacteria on different surfaces, and the rate of bacterial development in certain conditions, the entire operation was enhanced. That was crucial for the creation of controlled conditions to improve the performance of the device while still maintaining its end-user functionality and lower cost.

Key success factors

The chain-reaction of savings that has rounded off the whole project to be sustainable and driven by the knowledge, as well as the technology developed by the technology centres, were the project’s key success factors.

It was extremely difficult to achieve all the goals in such a short time frame, but all the involved parties showed team spirit and overcame all obstacles with joint forces, reaching a positive outcome.
